The Garra Rufa fish is a fresh water fish with origins in the thermal pools of some Turkish river systems. They can also be found in Iraq, Iran, Syria and Oman. Their nicknames include the Doctor fish and the Kangal fish.
In recent times, they have become popular as a spa treatment, due to the fact that they feed on dead skin. During fish pedicures, this fish is famous for its ability to eat dead or diseased human skin while leaving healthy skin untouched. They are said to provide some temporary relief for patients with psoriasis.
During their activities of foraging for food, they simply slough off dead skin. In the wild their food consists of aufwuchs - the dominant component of which is green algae and diatoms.
We also sell Gyrinocheilus aymonieri fish. This is a native S.E. Asia fish and sometimes go by the Thai nickname of SaiNamPhung . They are similar algae eaters to the Garra Rufa. They also have no teeth and they similarly remove dead skin in their search for food.
While eating dead human skin, the Garra rufa is claimed to release an enzyme which has a vitalising effect on the new to grow skin.
It has been suggested, but not proven, that the saliva of the fish contain an enzyme similar to dithranol, a synthetic product in skin oils and creams, that is often used in the treatment of psoriasis. (Dithranol is extracted and synthesized from a tree (the Araroba tree, which grows in tropical rainforests around the Amazon River)).
The enzyme of the garra rufa fish perhaps shows a similarity to dithranol and, therefore, has a positive effect on skin disorders.
Anyway, the instincts of this special fish certainly provide a popular fish pedicure.
